A Heart of Thanksgiving
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
It is not always easy to be thankful. When your child is refusing to eat the dinner you made, when your husband leaves his dirty socks on the floor again, when work never seems to let up...gratefulness is not naturally plastered in your mind as a priority. And sometimes, it can be hard to reflect on what the Lord has given you when life just seems to be nothing but rainy skies.
The Apostle Paul penned the words of Philippians while in prison. Being trapped in a cell day-in-day-out, separated from loved ones and his church ministry...how could he say these words? How could one be thankful in the daily annoyances let alone those circumstances? Paul is a true example of how to incorporate gratefulness when factors whisper that you should be bitter, overwhelmed, and faithless.
Many of us are blessed with tangible reminders of God’s provision for us. A roof over our head, clean drinking water, music to listen to at our fingertips. If you take time to sit down and write out ten things you can thank God for, and I encourage you to do this, I’m sure you’d think of more than ten. It truly is incredible how much God blesses us, with not only things we use daily but our spiritual blessings.
When Paul looked around his cell, it might not have been visibly easy to point to something and thank God for it. We are told in Scripture that with Christ, we lack nothing. Nothing! We can have peace, joy, love, and hope. We are given courage to face our fears and strength through the Holy Spirit to accomplish the big and small tasks. Take time to think about things you can thank God for that are spiritual.
God gives us so much, doesn’t he? Above and beyond! When we reflect on the goodness of God in our lives, we can have faith and boldness in our prayers, knowing that he is able to give us good things and has the best in mind for our future.
Do you know that he has you, daughter of God? Believe that the Lord sees you. He sees your daily needs, and he provides so much that you don’t even realize. Most of all, know how much he loves you! With this in mind, pray boldly and live with a thankful heart.
